KS1 Lesson 2 Main 1: Alien words

Group size:  whole class

Tag words: nouns, verbs, adjectives, phonics list, alien, words, body percussion, hand percussion

Show the pupils some alien words (KS1 phonics) – decode them as a class.

Ask the class “what do these alien words mean?  Could it be a name?  A thing or an object?  An action?”

Linking the answers to the word classes (nouns, verbs, adjectives), ask the class to come up with their definitions for each word, and display the words on the board or on sugar paper.

Refer back to the starter activity (Space, KS1, lesson 2) and ask the class to ‘play’ these alien words with their body percussion.

If hand percussion is available, hand it out and lead the class in a call and response activity using the alien words.  Once the class is able to respond to one pattern, try stringing two words or three words together to get a longer response from them.  If possible, record this activity for evidence and for display at the end of the project.
